THINKING GLOBALLY

««LEFT: Agustya Mehta poses in front of the Louvre during his 2007 internship at Schlumberger, Paris.

“Going to Paris and working at Schlumberger this summer through the VI-A program has been an exciting educational experience.  Through this program I've made friends from across the world, learned more about what work in my field might be like if I decided to go into industry. This VI-A assignment has opened up my view of how people work in different cultures and what living in another country is really like, something that I think everyone should experience. Plus I can boast to my friends about my weekends exploring the Louvre!

By offering internships abroad, the VI-A program ensures that our students are at the forefront of understanding both theoretical and practical engineering issues in a global environment.

The EECS department’s VI-A internship program has begun the

VI-A international version for global internships and industry-based masters of engineering theses around the world in Summer 2006. Current VI-A companies with research and product development operations are targeted for this program.  We hope to expand to other multi-national corporations around the globe.

The program provides professional experience in an industrial environment and offers students the opportunity to do an MIT EECS master of engineering thesis with the supervision of both company engineers and MIT faculty. With today’s global network of product definition, design, and manufacturing, internationalizing the VI-A program will ensure that our students are at the forefront of understanding practical engineering issues in a global environment.

Google internship:

"Because research is fundamentally about solving difficult problems, and such challenges exist for everyone everywhere, there is no better way to explore the unknown than through the combined perspectives and efforts of researchers with completely different
styles and cultures.
Through the EECS VI-A International Program I worked with inspiring
friends and colleagues at Google Beijing this past summer. This
experience has shown me the hope that lies in our collective human
ingenuity."

"Through the VI-A program, I spent an incredible summer at the Google Beijing office. My three-month assignment was a combination of a rewarding research experience and an eye-opening cultural experience amongst the 2008 Olympics spirit in Beijing. My work at Google made me realize that effective research requires not only individual diligence but also collective effort. Researchers at the Beijing office work more closely with the interns than other Google officers by providing unparalleled support and rich experience to guide you along your research process."
