Your VI-A internship is a great way to "get your foot in the door" at our Partner corporations. In fact, some students are offered jobs upon completion of the program. Here's what some of our VI-A graduates have to say about the program:
"My VI-A internship at Texas Instruments was a great experience. I was treated just like a regular member of the team I worked with and I got to sit in on a lot of meetings, which allowed me to see the design process at many different stages and from different perspectives. I feel like now I have a much better idea of what the everyday challenges are that an engineer faces and how a team works together to develop a product."

"I thoroughly enjoyed my VI-A internships and they were a valuable source of real-world engineering experience. The continuity between internship assignments allowed me to get involved in more significant and interesting work."

"Working three VI-A summers and a fall term at three different groups within TI gave me a great sense of the range of the company's technologies and what I wanted to work on after graduation. I also saw first hand how the company's stated diversity policy translated into a company culture that was inclusive of LGBT workers, and this played a large part in my decision to work for TI."

"My VI-A internship with Analog Devices in Cambridge was an extremely positive experience. I learned concepts that were not covered in my MIT classes, and I learned them from some of the best engineers in the analog field. At the end of the internship (and after more than a few hours in lab!), I had a functional integrated electric-field sensor. The VI-A internship also provided an in-depth view of Analog Devices from an employee perspective. I was more than impressed and decided to remain with the company after graduation as a design engineer in San Jose."

"I thought VI-A was a very positive experience. In particular, what made VI-A so valuable is that it is specifically targeted towards learning through industry experience and applying classroom knowledge to an industry type of methodology. I heard often from other students in general internship programs (non-VI-A) that they were responsible for somewhat boring tasks that had to be done, but companies didn't want to trouble their full-time staff with them. In the end, I think it almost always pays-off for the company as well as the student, because if the student follows the VI-A program all the way through, the company has a valuable employee that can apply the great wealth of knowledge gained at MIT to industry problems. The result is an M.Eng. thesis that is not only valuable to the student, but a valuable piece of work for the VI-A company as well. In my case, I liked the program and people I worked with so much that I accepted a full-time offer, and am continuing to build on my experience in VI-A."

"The VI-A program gave me a unique opportunity to gain both working and academic experience. For my 6-month term, I researched and worked alongside experienced engineers with valuable insight to share. At the same time, I received support and advice from my faculty advisor. In the end, I had the satisfaction of finishing an academic research project and writing a paper, while producing useful results for my VI-A company."
"I loved working at a company for my M.Eng. thesis through the VI-A program. I felt that my project was challenging and novel, and my research was useful for both academic and industrial purposes. I also feel that one of the strongest advantages of doing thesis work at a company, over staying on campus, is that you are surrounded by experienced engineers, whom you could go to with many, many questions. I was co-mentored informally by a number of them, in addition to my official research supervisor, and it was like having 10 professors help me with my thesis. I really appreciated the environment, and I couldn't have asked for a better learning experience." (Song-Hee is now a full-time employee at Analog's Wilmington, MA location.)
The VI-A program is a great opportunity for Course 6 undergraduates to find internships at some of the best companies in the area - it is a great way to get your foot in the door. Whether you are interested in industry or research laboratory internships, the VI-A program has much to offer."
